Best 10GbE Network Switch for Your Homelab

We refurbish and sell enterprise servers for a living, and the question we hear right after “which CPU?” is almost always about networking: “My Proxmox cluster feels slow — what switch do I actually need?” Every machine we ship leaves with dual 1GbE, and for most workloads that’s fine. But the moment you run ZFS replication, Ceph, or nightly VM backups between nodes, 1GbE (about 110 MB/s in the real world) becomes the wall. This guide covers the 10GbE switches we actually recommend to homelab builders, the SFP+ vs copper decision that matters more than the brand, and how to buy one without getting burned.

SFP+ vs copper: decide this first

There are two ways to carry 10 gigabit, and picking wrong is the most common mistake we see. SFP+ ports take pluggable modules or — much cheaper — DAC cables, which are basically pre-terminated twinax that cost $15–25. They’re cool, quiet, and low-latency. 10GBASE-T copper (RJ45) works with the same cables as gigabit, but each port draws 2–4 watts, runs hot, and needs active cooling in the switch. Our rule: if your NICs have SFP+ — and most enterprise NICs (Intel X520/X710, Mellanox ConnectX-3) do — buy an SFP+ switch and DAC cables. Only pay for copper 10G if you have RJ45 10G NICs or a mix of 2.5GbE devices that need an uplink to a 10G backbone.

Our picks

💰 Best budget — MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN

Four 10G SFP+ ports plus a 1G management port, fully fanless, for around $130. This is the switch that makes 10G a no-brainer for a 2-node cluster plus a NAS. It runs RouterOS or SwOS, handles VLANs and link aggregation, and sits silent on a shelf. We spec these in the “starter cluster” builds we sell to first-time homelabbers — nothing else comes close at the price.

🏆 Best for a Proxmox cluster — UniFi USW-Aggregation

Eight 10G SFP+ ports, fanless, around $270, managed from the same UniFi Network app that runs your gateway and APs. Eight ports cover a 3-node cluster, a NAS, and still leave spares for future nodes. If you’re already in the UniFi ecosystem — and most homelabbers are — this is the cleanest possible upgrade path: no separate login, no VLAN config to re-learn, just plug in DACs and go.

🔌 Best for mixed 2.5G/10G — QNAP QSW-M2108-2S

Eight 2.5GbE ports plus two 10G SFP+ uplinks, fanless and unmanaged, around $220. Modern motherboards ship with 2.5GbE on board, so this is the right pick when your PCs are 2.5G but your storage server or NAS has a 10G SFP+ port. Everything just works when you plug it in — no config at all — and the 2.5G ports are a real upgrade over gigabit for workstation-to-NAS transfers.

⚡ Best 8-port for bigger clusters — MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S+IN

Eight 10G SFP+ ports in a fanless desktop box for around $250. This is the step up from the CRS305 when you run 3+ nodes, especially with Ceph or distributed storage where every node wants two 10G links. RouterOS gives you full Layer 3 routing on the same device, so you can build a 10G spine without adding a router. Quiet, cool, and absurdly capable for the money.

🖥️ Best with copper 10G — UniFi USW-Flex XG

Four 10GBASE-T copper ports plus two 10G SFP+, fanless, around $290. Choose this only if your gear is actually copper 10G — a workstation with a 10GBASE-T NIC, or a NAS with RJ45 10G — and you want short runs without DACs. One honest warning from the bench: copper 10G runs hot, so don’t bury this switch in a sealed cabinet; give it airflow and it’ll be fine.

Buying a 10GbE switch safely

  • Match port types to your NICs before you buy. Count SFP+ vs RJ45 across your servers, NAS, and workstation. Buying an all-SFP+ switch when your NAS only has copper 10G means adapter hunting later.
  • Budget for DAC cables. Plan $15–25 per SFP+ link. They’re the cheapest, coolest, most reliable way to connect — go fiber + transceivers only for runs longer than about 7 meters.
  • Skip used enterprise switches for the house. A $100 Cisco from eBay is tempting, but most idle at 40–60W and scream at 50dB+ with jet-engine fans. We rack those in datacenters, not living rooms — buy fanless and new for a homelab.
  • Only pay for PoE if you need it. If your APs and cameras already have power, a plain switch with a few more 10G ports beats a PoE model you’ll never use.
  • Check the noise spec. Every pick above is fanless. The moment a switch has fans, ask for the dB rating — anything above ~30dB will annoy you in a home office.
